The Art of Communication

What is the strongest form of communication?

When we talk about communication we are mainly looking at verbal or nonverbal, however they are broken down even further from there. But is one form of communication better than the others?

Many people consider art and imagery better than written communication since it's not bound to a language and anyone who is able to use their eyes can see it. Visual communication is able to reach out to the majority of people out there without jumping through as many obstacles as the other forms of communication. However it isn't perfect, in fact people can simply abstain from seeing the communication just by not looking. Still, visual communication is the easiest way to grab the attention of those willing to glance long enough to have their attention stolen. The most important tool of visual communication is almost even more of a close competition than the types of communication are. Though one of the easiest ways to draw attention is the choice of color in the communication. If someone is already looking at a piece of visual communication, color or the lack of color might be the easiest way to draw someones attention to a specific part of the information you have created. All of the tools of visual communication are used to draw attention to something in some form or another, yet color can do it subtly and consistently. Companies have gone as far as trademarking their logo color such as The Coca-Cola Company.

Some companies have reached enough recognition to create some strong visual communication in the form of a minimalist advertisement using nothing but their logo. The easiest and quite possibly overused example of this is Nike, because they have managed to mark nearly everyone across the globe with their black and white check mark. The companies visual communication through their simple logo manages to make the person looking at the logo imagine all sorts of apparel. Other things such as typography/font can have just as big of an influence as a logo. An example of this is in the film industry with sequels or a series of films. Nearly everyone is aware of the font used for "Star Wars", whether you've seen any of them or not. A fairly simple explanation as to why the font for movies makes you think of the movie is just because it is unique to that movie, just as star wars has the blocky letters, James Bond has its 007 font with a gun symbol following it. In a way, a typography is just another form of logo creation, and in some cases it is both. The Coca-Cola Company does a perfect job of representing everything listed. It not only has a trademark color, it has a specific font as well as a logo that can be recognized due to its minimalistic design. The logo is the name and the name is the logo, as well as the color or font being able to stand alone and communicate the brand.
