Com 322 Semester Portfolio

This semester went by super fast for everyone. Things started slow but very abruptly during midterms, things got fast and didn't slow down until the end of CEP week (finals week for Buffalo State). However even if things went fast, the final products of the semester were anything but slapped together quickly. Each assignment had plenty of time to do and took multiple ideas and changes along every step to refine the design and idea. Starting with a flyer, this assignment was a topic that was swapped with another student so that students were creating something they weren't passionate about to prove that they can create something passionate that they in fact don't feel passionate about. The objective was to use three pantone colors and create something on a topic that was assigned. As it shows, this flyer is about decriminalizing marijuana across the parts of America that have it legal since marijuana is still being used to discriminately arrest and harass primarily black males. Secondly, there was a resume assignment that helped students design a resume that is professional but designy enough to stand out amongst other resumes to better promote oneself before even getting an interview. Thirdly, with a group project, students designed a series of brochures that work as a series but remain stand alone brochures that promote or inform. In the two photos above for the brochure is information on "ConnectLife" which is a nonprofit group that helps provide blood and organ donations to local hospitals for Western New York. The content is all following the organizations style guide, right down to the spot colors and font type. Finally, with the final project students were to make a company logo, postcard as well as a business card all related to themselves and their company. Here we have John Ovak creating all three of these surrounding just himself, having his company name just being his own name. The strength behind these pieces is the attempt of avoiding the cliches of the writing field of work for logo design. Most logos have a ink bottle and quill or something like a fountain pen, even a good amount of ink stains for logos. Now this logo design still relates to the industry by using a splatter black ink in a water color texture but still avoids the heavy cliches. In addition, the color choice for the background on the postcard and business card fits as something that is not just detailed but dark and simple enough to not completely distract the viewer from the actual content on the image.
